New Orleans outscored the hated Falcons 43-37 in overtime at Atlanta Sunday moving their record to 2-1 and a share of the NFC South lead. After the game a fight ensued between two falcon fans which was hilarious as some “Whodats” broke into a chant as the two walked away in embarrassment. The big story was Drew Brees breaking the all time completion record surpassing Brett Farve for number one on the list at 6326. Brees also did his Mike Vick impersonation running for 2 scores including a spin move off two defenders. We should really appreciate the greatness of number 9 now as it is much closer to the end than the beginning.
The absence of Mark Ingram has affected a myriad of things of the team, Alvin Kamara usage the most glaring, but also the defense. Kamara had an incredible 34 touches which I’m not sure if that is sustainable, but I never say 41 can’t do something, it is still a staggering usage rate. With Ingram between the tackles running in the past the Saints could take an early lead and control the clock, now they have to throw more short passes to 41 and Mike Thomas instead of pounding the rock.
The biggest deficiency I see has been the number 2 cornerback, rookie Calvin Ridley scored 3 touchdowns as Matt Ryan threw for 5 scores in a losing cause. Cam Jordan and company seem to be getting good pressure but receivers are getting behind the defensive coverage. Can the Saints just put Taysom Hill at safety when they have a late lead they guy is just a good football player in whatever role they need him in. I expect another shootout type game with the Giants Sunday, maybe like the crazy 52-49 game in the dome in 2015. Regardless of the problems with the secondary, injuries and suspensions the Saints are exactly where they should be and excuses don’t count for anything in the NFL.
