I LOVE THIS PICK. Sorry for shouting, but damn it just needed to be said. What a great pick this was. I didn’t expect to see Chauncey Gardner-Johnson fall out of the first couple of picks of the 2nd round, much less be in a position for the Saints to nab him by trading up in the 4th round to select him. Find something for him to do and he can do it. Whether it be in the box, single-high safety (no, not the podcast), or in the box.
He has the range.
He can tackle.
He can blitz.
Man, I just can’t stop gushing about him. What also makes him great is the coachability. He had a real bad 2017 but became an elite defender one year later under a different coaching staff. If The Saints have shown anything, it’s that they can get the most out of their players. Look at Eli Apple, people were basically saying he was a bust in New York, but bring him into the New Orleans locker room and he looked like a new player mid-year.
If you put any stock into Pro Football Focus, then be excited. He was their highest-rated slot defender in the SEC marking an 86.9 overall grade. That’s 9.9 higher than the 2nd rated defender. They also marked him as getting 15 stops in the slot position. A stop is when the ball carrier is stuffed at, or behind the line of scrimmage.
Stats-wise his 2018 campaign saw him rack up a fierce line. 71 total tackles, 9 of them for a loss. 2 pass deflections and 4 interceptions for 2 touchdowns.
One reason some believe he dropped was that he probably didn’t interview well leading up to the draft, but that should be of no concern to us fans. He has a history with Aaron Glenn, who was his coach at the High School Nike Opening and has followed up with him throughout college. He has also said in interviews how excited he was to join the fun environment that is the Saints locker room. Outside of the locker room and on the field he has shown excitement that our team is set-up for a championship run and knows what it wants to do.
Combining his versatility, results, excitement to join the team, and history with Aaron Glenn will bring you nothing but happiness. Welcome to the Who Dat Nation CGJ. We are so very glad to have you.
